chasing likes.

In the age of Instagram, luxury proposals are all about the likes and not the love. Let’s be real some of the most elaborate, over-the-top proposals these days are less about a romantic moment and more about setting up a picture perfect moment for social media. We’ve all seen it: an engagement set against the backdrop of a private jet with “Marry Me?” spelled out in the sky, or the beach proposal with a personalised firework display lighting up the night. Sure, it’s beautiful, but is it about the connection… or the content?
Alia Bhatt, an Indian actress, her Masai Mara proposal by Ranbir Kapoor in
2022 was a stunning and unforgettable grand gesture. While on a romantic
trip to Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, Ranbir surprised Alia with a
proposal in the midst of breathtaking landscapes. The intimate moment,
captured in a heartfelt photo, showed Ranbir on one knee, presenting her
with an exquisite diamond ring. The ring, reportedly a custom-made
solitaire, features a stunning oval diamond surrounded by smaller stones,
estimated to be worth around ₹3-4 crore. This thoughtful and luxurious
gesture left fans in awe of their love story.
A body-positive fashion influencer Sakshi Sindwani was proposed to by her
long-time partner, Raghav Arora, during a trip to Scotland back in
September 2023 . While hiking amidst Scotland’s picturesque landscapes,
Raghav surprised Sakshi with a proposal, presenting her with a sleek
diamond band featuring an oval-shaped solitaire which was priced at Rs
2.5 crore Sakshi shared the enchanting experience on her social media,
captivating her followers with the heartfelt gesture.
Tarini Kapoor, a 20-year-old pursuing economic honours at DU, says, ‘‘It’s
always been a dream for me to get proposed in a grand way, either like in
the middle of the sea in Maldives or at the top of a cliff in Switzerland.I
personally like big love confessions that depict the immense efforts and
the love between the couples. I think it is definitely a cute gesture.”
Anwesha Goel, a 19-year-old marketing student from NMIMS Mumbai, says
that a different take is had by her on these enormous proposals. According
to her, they are seen as being meant only for social media, and the desire
for such a grand engagement confession might not actually be felt. She
believed that it’s all done just for the pictures and to show off.
These over-the-top gestures have us thinking we need a helicopter,
fireworks, or a flash mob to propose. But come on, when did
proposals turn into a contest for who can spend the most money to get
the most likes on social media?
