With every stitch into the fabric, a new memory is created by the legends who keep the art of handmade alive.

Remember in childhood when our parents would take us to a nearby “master ji” to get our traditional clothes made? There is something about their fit, the way they make you feel, and their uniqueness.
Sharanya Lohani, 18, a fashion designing student from Pearl Academy, shares how she has tried fast fashion, but it is notfor her. She adds, “No matter how good an outfit looks in stores like Zara or on online websites like Ajio and Myntra, they are not unique and definitely don’t last long. I prefer my clothes tailor stitched. From satin shirts to embellished dresses, the experience of choosing my own fabric and hemline, customising it at every step is the most satisfying.”

When we invest in tailored fits, we are not just buying garments, we are supporting the livelihood of artisans and preserving their craft, which is slowly being lost in a world of mass production and fast fashion. More importantly, the journey of creating a piece just for you is worth more than anything else.
“I feel so special when my tailor invests so much time in a single piece of clothing made especially for me. His goal is not to make more but to make better.”

Of course, ready-made fashion has its advantages. It is often affordable, trendy, and easily accessible, making it a preferred choice for all, especially for the younger generations, who love experimenting with new styles. However, this accessibility often leads to impulsive buying and overflowing wardrobes. When clothing is just a click away, we often buy more than we need.
Another disadvantage is the lack of uniqueness. It is common to step out and see multiple people wearing the same outfit, which takes away the charm of exclusivity, quite the opposite of handmade clothing.
Jenikaa Grover, 13, a Class 8 student fromModern School, Barakhamba road, Delhi, shared a distinct perspective: “I love the variety and affordability of ready-to-wear clothes. It is fun to experiment with endless styles every season. My go-to brands are Savana and New Me. But I must admit that the quality isn’t always great, and I end up buying too much. When I compare it to a stitched kurta I got for a wedding, I must say it looked better.”
Handmade pieces are heart made. They are more than just a piece of fabric, they reflect artistry, patience, and care. In a world chasing fast fashion, choosing handcrafted custom-made pieces is not just about style, it’s about preserving an art form and supporting artisans who weave a different story with each garment they make.
